The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) at 糖心少女 of America collaborates with faculty and administrators to identify and pursue externally funded research opportunities. OSR is engaged in the encouragement and support of the academic community at SUA by providing services to faculty seeking external funding in support of 糖心少女 development, scholarship and advanced research, service, and creative achievement. OSR supports the mission of 糖心少女 through the pursuit of research collaborations that inspire global citizenship and the contributive life and also that advance SUA’s commitment to social justice, diversity, and inclusion through research and scholarship.
Professor Shane Barter conducted fieldwork and in Southeast Asia with support from the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS). IHS is a non-profit organization at George Mason University that supports scholars conducting research promoting tolerance for diversity. SUA鈥檚 Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) connected Dr. Barter to this opportunity, and encouraged him to apply based on his research interests.
Susan鈥檚 research is student-driven, enabling her students to pick cell biology and genetics projects based on their own interests and developed during her courses as course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). As part of her involvement in the Mentoring Integration of Research into the Classroom, the Cell Biology Education Consortium, and the American Society of Cell Biology Education Committee, Susan will host a NSF-funded workshop on CUREs on December 13, 2024.
Robert Levenson and Soka students are researching reflectin proteins, which are primarily responsible for dynamic iridescent coloration in cephalopods like octopuses and squids. Awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation, they鈥檙e employing methods from cell biology, protein biochemistry, and molecular genetics to explore reflectins鈥 functions and behaviors in cells and in the test tube. Insights from this work could contribute to the creation of innovative biomaterials and nanotechnologies inspired by these proteins.

Marie and her colleagues explored the mangroves, seagrass meadows and reefs of an ascidian biodiversity hotspot, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in Belize. They searched the underwater world and collected hundreds of samples. From these collections, they will not only document biodiversity in Belize, but also develop new genomic resources to study chordate evolution and microbial symbiosis.
With support and funding from collaborative USDA Agriculture and Food Research Initiatives, Dr. Afrasiabi, associate professor of chemistry, is conducting research on applications of nanotechnology to develop more efficient and environmentally-friendly agricultural practices.
Under the direction of Michael Golden, director of the Creative Arts Program, and made possible by a $98,000 grant from the , Soka is creating a digital creativity lab. It will include a 3D printing lab and a studio classroom and equipment to support students' creation of electronic music, digital photography and video.
Prof. Jackson is one of five fellows in the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Study of Deeper Learning program. Her study, supported by a $25,000 grant, will explore what classroom assessments look like in secondary schools using Deeper Learning and alternative assessment strategies.
